Understanding Adolescent Trauma

Adolescence is a critical period of emotional and psychological development, and exposure to trauma can significantly impact a young person’s well-being. This presentation will provide an overview of adolescent trauma, including its prevalence, risk factors, and the ways it manifests in behavior and mental health.

This session is designed for social workers, counselors, marriage and family therapists, school counselors, and other mental health professionals who work with adolescents. About the speakers

Caitlin Connolly, LCSW, CAADC

Director of Adolescent Clinical Services, Skyland Trail

Caitlin is a licensed clinical social worker and a certified Prolonged Exposure therapist. She is currently the Director of Clinical Services at the Skyland Trail Adolescent campus, a residential program for teenagers looking to better manage a variety of mental health challenges including trauma. She has experience in community mental health, corrections-based mental health, trauma-focused care, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and mental health in various education settings. Caitlin is passionate about working with adolescents the ever-changing mental health needs of this nation’s youth, and the impact of substance use in this developing population.

Alex Rothbaum, PhD, MPH

Outcomes and Research Director, Skyland Trail

Alex O. Rothbaum is a researcher, educator, and clinician with a focus on translational approaches to better understand and develop interventions for trauma, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), health disparities, and social determinants of health. Alex works with interdisciplinary teams throughout the translational spectrum, from molecules, to mechanisms, to bedside, to population, that range from mechanistic investigations, clinical trials, and implementation of best practices. Alex is Director of Research and Outcomes at Skyland Trail and an Adjunct Assistant Professor at Emory University. He received his PhD in Clinical Psychology and Master of Public Health in Population Health Research from Case Western Reserve University. Alex completed his clinical internship at the MUSC/VA Charleston Consortium and his T32 postdoctoral fellowship in traumatic stress in the National Crime Victims Research and Treatment Center at Medical University of South Carolina. Alex has clinical experience in hospital, intensive, and outpatient settings providing evidence-based psychotherapy and has been trained as a Prolonged Exposure (PE) consultant.
